Harvard Study Highlights the Many Benefits of Increasing Your Insulation

A new Harvard study describes the multiple benefits realized from increasing your insulation, including improvements to public health due to lower energy consumption.  Among the findings are:

  • 65% of U.S. homes (45 million) are insulated below the 2000 International Energy Conservation Code levels
  • 800 trillion BTUs could be saved per year with better insulation
  • With every BTU of energy produced, harmful gases are released into the air
  • 240 premature deaths due to pollution could be prevented each year with better insulation

Department of Energy Report on Radiant Barrier Reflective Insulation

The Department of Energy's Radiant Barrier Fact Sheet states that homeowners can expect up to 17% cooling savings depending on climate, current amount of insulation in the attic, and household energy use. Many of our customers claim to have seen higher results, but these results have not been scientifically verified by a 3rd party. Homeowners and businesses love it.

Roofing Siding Insulation, March 2007

A recent economic evaluation study of insulation systems for block-wall construction revealed that reflective insulation is the most cost-effective insulation system. The information accumulated by R&D Services of Cookeville, Tenn., indicated that reflective insulation provides a better value proposition due to its adequate thermal performance on R-value and because of its low cost per R-value, when compared with other insulation systems in the study.

Additionally, reflective insulation provides greater energy savings and payback because of its lower installation cost and greater resiliency over time.

NASA’s Spinoff Magazine (2004) highlights Eagle Shield

Over 40 years ago, NASA developed Radiant Barrier technology to protect astronauts in the Apollo Program from temperatures that ranged from 250°F above to 400°F below zero Fahrenheit. This feat in temperature control technology enabled the astronauts to work inside the Apollo Command Module wearing short-sleeve shirts, with temperatures similar to those of a regular business office.

Eagle Shield is a Radiant Barrier product that can be installed directly on top of existing ceiling insulation in a home to reduce heating and cooling bills. Manufactured by Eagle Shield Insulation Inc., of Dublin, California, the product consists of two sheets of 99.5 percent industrial grade aluminum adhered together and tri-laminated to a thermal break to create a two-sided reflector. It is perforated with tiny holes that allow moisture to pass through so it does not create a moisture barrier for existing insulation.
